Abstract:
With installation almost complete of a world class facility for manufacturing large scale (1,000kg poured weight) titanium castings within a 1,200m2 extension to the current 4,500m2 advanced casting facility; CTI reveals its advanced investment casting capability. Utilising MEGAshell® technology, this facility will manufacture large-scale ceramic shell investment castings in both ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, poured into cold moulds with dimensions in excess of 2m x 2m x 2m, manufactured in one piece. This paper will give an introduction of the process and technology behind the current capabilities at CTI for manufacture of titanium castings and Replicast® components. Such capability forms the foundation for the future expansion into large structural steel and titanium castings manufactured from CTI’s innovative ceramic shell technologies. By taking advantage of advanced investment casting systems and novel casting processes, CTI can deliver a competitive and cost reduced casting process, providing unique and new capabilities for the global investment casting sector. The world-class technology and capability will not only address production needs of casting users, but most importantly provide an offline R&D and prototyping facility for manufacturers and end users of large titanium and ferrous investment castings.
The technical message addresses how it was possible to manufacture ceramic shell moulds capable of receiving several tonnes of liquid metal, achieving investment casting benefits at scales typically restricted to sand casting or fabrication. Details of development in manufacturing large structural titanium investment castings, overcoming technical obstacles and pushing the boundaries of current technology.
