Abstract:
MPI has conducted a customer survey to determine what problems investment casting foundries are experiencing in their wax rooms. This paper provides the details of that survey. We have analyzed the results to determine, by industry served, what are the most common issues in the wax room. The top issues are then systematically broken down to their respective root cause(s). With each problem, we have attempted to provide at least one real world example along with the appropriate troubleshooting techniques that allow proper analysis of that specific issue. The corrective action(s) necessary to resolve the issue is explained as well as the outcome of making the needed process changes. Where applicable, the ICI Atlas of Wax Pattern Defects, REVISED 2ND Edition as well as the ICI Process Control course materials is referenced.
It is our experience that the correct application of process controls addresses these problems. High level control capabilities, combined with training on how to properly troubleshoot these problems and a good understanding of how to modify current processes will mitigate or even eliminate the problem leading to increased productivity and decreased scrap.
Note: our goal is to find one or more partner foundries that will share practical experience correcting the highest problem area identified in the survey.
